2017 is History, and Thank Goodness!
December is always a bit of a rough month for me and my family. My nephew who lives with us has his birthday on December 15. His adult sister's is December 21, and his oldest brother's birthday is December 29. Throw Christmas in, and that's a lot. But, I'm not done. My youngest daughter's birthday is December 26, and mine is December 27. My son was born on January 19, while my oldest daughter was born February 5. Oh! I have another nephew (whom I never see anymore) whose birthday is December 31.
Needless to say, our family has a lot going on in December. Over the years, we've gotten use to it. This year, however, we nearly lost Dad. Any opportunity for a breather was gone, as we all seemed to be holding our breath there for a while. Now that it's over, I want to say, "Thank goodness."
But, when I look back at 2017, I have to recognize all the blessings in my life. Book 1 was published. This took me on a journey I'll never forget. I've met many people in various places. I got to meet actors Gary Busey, Kevin Sorbo, Michael Berryman, and Michael Copon, all of whom were very pleasant people. I also met James O'Bar, creator of the comic, "The Crow." He even helped me pull a prank on a friend. I made new friends, like comic book artist Eddie Price (subject of the aforementioned prank) and fellow author of fantasy novels, Keith Robinson.
My wife stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to travel with me. Meeting new people isn't easy for her. But, she traveled with me so I wouldn't have to travel alone. This gave us time to spent together, which was nice. We continue to grow in our relationship, and having alone time in beautiful places is never a bad thing.
Additionally, I had one daughter get engaged, while another went off to college chasing (and achieving) her dream. My oldest daughter was able to decide what she wants to do in life and went back to school too. There were many other blessings this year, far too many to list.
All in all, 2017 was a good and productive year. So, why is it that the ending of something can ruin or diminish the good in it. Today, we seem to see everything through a haze of anticipated disappointment, pain and sorrow. When something doesn't go our way, that's all we allow ourselves to see. Well, no more! I say, let's make 2018 the year we learn to focus on the good in our lives. Learn from the bad as much as we can, using those experiences to help us better appreciate the good ones.
Have you ever hear the phrase, "perception is reality?" It means, how you perceive something is your reality. In a way, you create your own reality. I say let Ecclesiastes 8:15 be your filter through which you perceive your reality. Enjoy life. If not, it isn't really life, is it?
